What is wellbeing?
What is wellbeing?
Wellbeing from the Oxford Dictionary – the state of feeling
comfortable, healthy or happy
Wellbeing from the Collins Dictionary – the condition of
being contented, healthy or successful
Wellbeing from the NHS - Wellbeing is about feeling good and
functioning well and comprises an individual's experience of their life; and a
comparison of life circumstances with social norms and values.
Wellbeing from the World Health Organisation - "Health
is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely
the absence of disease or infirmity." An important implication of this
definition is that mental health is more than just the absence of mental
disorders or disabilities.
What are the pillars of wellbeing?
The 8 pillars of wellbeing are Physical, Nutritional,
Spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual, financial, environmental.
To achieve a complete feeling of wellbeing, we have to achieve
a personal satisfaction in all 8 pillars of wellbeing. This will be different for
every single person, as we are all unique, we all have a different biology,
personality and environment.
To help you achieve your complete feeling of wellbeing, we
will go through what the 8 pillars are:
Physical – When we talk about physical the main thing that
is thought about is exercise, which is important, there are also sleep, hygiene
and a healthy diet (nutrition).
Nutritional – Do you eat a variation of nutritional food? Do
you consume lots of colourful fruits and vegetables? Do you pay attention to
your portion sizes? When you improve your nutrition, your whole physical
wellbeing can improve.
Spiritual – This one is different for everyone, we have to
live our life to our values, our purpose or for what ever life means to us.
Emotional – This is being self-aware? Do you listen to your
feelings? Are you aware of your behaviours? When we become more aware of our
emotions, we can transform our life.
Social – This is the circle of friends you connect with and
who allow you to be you and encourage you to live your best life. It also about
your ability to deal with conflict.
Intellectual – Do you train your brain on a regular basis? Learn
new things, step outside your comfort zone which allows you to grow emotionally
and physically depending on what you do.
Financial – This is when we live within our means, make plans
for the future.
Environmental – This is your space around you, where you
live, the town, village, country. How do you see your environment? Do you
respect the environment?
In future blogs I will go deeper into each section to allow
you to learn more.
If you find any of these pillars are off a wellbeing coach
